“At the best way of positioning this, it’s just poor judgement. But honestly, I just think that it’s criminal in a sense. They’re just stealing money from Talarico.”— A.J. Carrillo
John Hickenlooper is running for re-election in Colorado — a safe blue seat where he’s heavily favored to win.
But his campaign is actively siphoning donations away from two candidates who desperately need every dollar they can get: James Talarico in Texas and Adam Hamilton in Kansas.
The Hickenlooper campaign is using SEO and AEO tactics to manipulate search results and AI summaries. When voters search to donate to Talarico or Hamilton, they’re instead getting directed to ActBlue donation forms that — despite appearing to be for the intended candidate — actually funnel 100% of the funds to Hickenlooper.
A.J. Carrillo stumbled upon this, along with numerous spam PACs running similar plays. He joined me on the pod to walk through how he uncovered it, what patterns he’s finding, and to share any lessons we can learn from these bad actors.

Josh Klemons: AJ Carrillo spent over 20 years working at the intersection of politics and technology. He’s managed high-profile races, working on teams that use technology and online organizing to achieve historic victories in multiple countries and at all levels of office from prime minister to Senate to Congress.
For the last decade, he’s been working in adtech with political and public affairs agencies where he’s focused on preventing the inadvertent funding of disinformation and ensuring media budgets support legitimate local and national publishers. AJ recently uncovered something, I think accidentally, but pretty something pretty wild uh that definitely got my attention and I invited him on the pod to tell us about it. So AJ, first of all, thank you so much for coming on. Um we’ve known each other for a while. Um tell tell us the story. What did you find that um that that started this conversation?
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah, I was just just uh kind of was like through my political career I’ve worked all over the place and one of those places was Kansas back in 2004 and so I still have a connection there. I lived there for a few years off and on after that campaign and um stayed in touch with a lot of folks that I worked with and many of us are still actually working professionally in politics which is not necessarily the case when you meet someone in a campaign we all get real jobs or something at least what our parents would think and so I was uh for the Senate race there
Josh Klemons: Yeah.
A.J. Carrillo: I’ve always been you know the opinion for probably since last late la late late last year I was like I think we could if the conditions are ripe I think this could be a race that’s going to shock some people and in Kansas
Josh Klemons: Wild done.
A.J. Carrillo: internally ally there’s kind of like I I’m in I’m in Denver uh last year previously last year I was living in Denver and so like you know I follow politics there as well and the um there’s a thing called the four horsemen I’m kind of getting a little sidetracked but this but go with me here is that the the four horsemen were basically the the four billionaires or multi-millionaires that kind of got together saying hey
Josh Klemons: Sure.
A.J. Carrillo: we’re going to turn this state blue and they did one hell of a job of it obviously and so in Kansas they’ve been trying to replicate that model. Um, including someone I worked with years ago who hired me to work in Kansas. He’s kind of the one kind of orchestrating this Kansas equivalent of the four horsemen.
A.J. Carrillo: Granted, they don’t have like the Koch brothers in Kansas who actually are from Witchah area or Ko brother I guess you could say these days but um but uh you know so that their plan was like a 2028 2030
Josh Klemons: Mhm.
A.J. Carrillo: to have this all in place and as it turns out the conditions were ripe earlier to be able to make that type of impact to kind of use the growth in the Kansas City metro area to kind of like how Denver’s grown in the metro area to like overwhelm the state. um they thought that it would be a two or four year down the line and now it’s like all of a sudden like oh wow we can probably take this now and so um I was basically just kind of just pro promoting Hamilton’s candidacy online. I was like oh you know what where is his um his act blue? I was like, so I just typed in, you know, Anon Hamilton, Senate Act Blue page. And so it gave me a bunch of listings and and um partially because again, there’s hasn’t been a lot of news.
A.J. Carrillo: So like they’re not running internally a paid promotion on search for that to come up above everything else, but of the stuff that started coming up, none of it was for his campaign for his actual act blue page.
Josh Klemons: Interesting.
A.J. Carrillo: And so I was like, “Oh, what are these?” And so I clicked through and I was like, “Oh, this is like some rando pack that’s trying to like, you know, do SEO to like, you know, pick off some donations.” But at least they were splitting it half and half with like a joint fundraising page, which is a page type that ACLU has. And yeah, you know,
Josh Klemons: Sorry,
A.J. Carrillo: not terrible, but not great.
Josh Klemons: clarify this because it’s important. So, you did a Google search and you found organizations running ads or just using good organic
A.J. Carrillo: Just organic. Yeah, just just organic search.
Josh Klemons: strategies and they were showing up at the top of Google asking for money.
A.J. Carrillo: And they were Uhhuh.
Josh Klemons: It seemed like it was for Hamilton, for the Hamilton campaign,
A.J. Carrillo: Seemed like Yeah, they seem like it for Hamilton. They were splitting the the contributions 5050. So, I mean, it was not great, but it was at least they were um sharing the donation on a on
Josh Klemons: but these were like these were just packs.
A.J. Carrillo: a not at all.
Josh Klemons: They weren’t affiliated in any way.
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah, there was just some stuff you stuff that you get in your text messages, you know, the text spam we all get and random,
Josh Klemons: Yeah,
A.J. Carrillo: you know, vote blue,
Josh Klemons: like these were spam packs.
A.J. Carrillo: whatever. Yeah,
Josh Klemons: Spam packs.
A.J. Carrillo: Sams. Yes, exactly.
Josh Klemons: They were sucking. They were giving 50% of the money, which is nice, but they were taking 50% of the money for themselves.
A.J. Carrillo: Exactly.
Josh Klemons: So money that could be going to turn Kansas blue was instead like funding somebody’s beach house.
A.J. Carrillo: Precisely.
Josh Klemons: Okay.
A.J. Carrillo: And and for for Hamilton to make this to make it happen, I mean, they need every dollar possible because particularly right now that Republicans are panicking,
Josh Klemons: Every dollar possible.
A.J. Carrillo: all the money starting to pour into that state.
Josh Klemons: Okay.
A.J. Carrillo: Um but but as I further started clicking around and seeing who all these different packs were and and stuff, what was interesting to me was the fact that the um you know there’s a because of the rise of AI search, you know, Google has uh I for what they call it specifically, but it’s like the AI summary or whatever.
Josh Klemons: Mhm.
A.J. Carrillo: And so within there, it’ll have links as well. And what and so what was showing up there was another um one I was like it had the photo the screenshot of the official uh website uh or the official act blue photo that the campaign for Hamilton is using but it was for I clicked through it and I was like oh Adam Hamilton for Senate and it was all labeled had a YouTube video in there and I was like oh it must be the official page and it and as I was reading down and it says like who this goes for instead of a 50-50 split it said it 100% % goes take looper for Senate and I’m like what the hell is this all about?
A.J. Carrillo: Um and I was like that’s pretty shady. And then uh and just it was thoughtfully dumb even though it because at the bottom there was some you know text and stuff about Hamilton. I think it was like SEO they were trying to screw around with. dropping his name in there. And then um it had some rando pack that I guess they forgot to remove too. And I suspect that’s probably a scam pack that the agency that that ticket looper uses also has the scam pack situation going on. And so that it was like American Family Values Pack or something like that and they just forgot to take that out of
Josh Klemons: So,
A.J. Carrillo: the out of the footer text in the in the on the page.
Josh Klemons: so again, let’s make sure we’re on the same page here. So, you did a search. This was still for Hamilton because I know this also came up for tele.
A.J. Carrillo: Yep.
Josh Klemons: Okay. So, you’re searching for Hamilton’s campaign, Act Blue, and Google gives you an AI summary that says donate here.
A.J. Carrillo: Yep.
Josh Klemons: And it looks super official. You click through, there’s a YouTube video,
A.J. Carrillo: Yep.
Josh Klemons: it’s got his picture, whatever. Like, it it’s it looks like it’s a Hamilton page, but it’s actually a John Hickin Looper page, and all of the money is going to John Hickinlooper.
A.J. Carrillo: Yes, that’s that’s what that’s exactly what happened. Um although I I I’m trying to think though because you mentioned Terico and so essentially my curiosity I was like hey that’s I wonder how widespread this is and so I started checking around and it came up like other people were doing the same type of other these scam packs were coming up in search there and I’m forgetting though if it’s if if it was the Terica I think it was Hamilton. Yeah I’m pretty sure though it was Hamilton and the Hickin Looper campaign was doing it there that f******
Josh Klemons: That was the one I saw on LinkedIn.
A.J. Carrillo: there. Yes. Yeah.
Josh Klemons: You talked about Telerico specifically.
A.J. Carrillo: So that was the one.
A.J. Carrillo: Yes. Yes. So, but yeah,
Josh Klemons: So to clarify,
A.J. Carrillo: and then to tell a re Yeah.
Josh Klemons: like you thought somebody thinks they’re giving money to Terico, who is in a very hard state,
A.J. Carrillo: Yes.
Josh Klemons: uh has a historic chance to flip a Senate seat in Texas.
A.J. Carrillo: Exactly. Yes.
Josh Klemons: Um and 100% according to your LinkedIn post, 100% of the money, um like unlike the spam packs, which were at least splitting the money with Hamilton,
A.J. Carrillo: Yes.
Josh Klemons: Hickinlooper, for his safe seat in Colorado is taking 100% of the funds that people think they’re giving to Terico.
A.J. Carrillo: Yes. Yeah.
Josh Klemons: Is that
A.J. Carrillo: That’s Yeah, that’s correct. Yes. It was a Telerico page that was designed. It was a hurricane whooper back blue page, but it was designed to look like it was going to 100% to Terico. Like they had a video of Terico I dropped in there from YouTube. And then underneath that they had some, you know, text about supporting Terico, blah blah blah.
A.J. Carrillo: But it also said like it had this random um pack in there, which I suspected. I was like, I bet that’s probably whoever threw this together just forgot I edited it out.
Josh Klemons: when you say it was in there like it was just still in the footer. Like where was that pack listed?
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah. underneath that uh underneath the video, there was some text in there about how Rico, we got to support him. It’s the toughest race, blah blah blah. And then it said it had a line saying like uh this is you know a project of American family values pack or something and I was like I bet they forgot to edit this out because it was some template.
Josh Klemons: right?
A.J. Carrillo: Um and and it’s probably a client of theirs that they’re working with and but but what was nefarious about it was like 100% of the contributions were going to hick and loopers pack. Um, and I was like just like top race in the country for us like uh you know it’s
Josh Klemons: Of course.
A.J. Carrillo: it’s critical for multiple reasons and we don’t need to elaborate it here but it’s just like but
Josh Klemons: Of course. Yeah, for sure. I think listeners to this podcast understand what we’re talking about here.
A.J. Carrillo: it’s but it’s just like but it’s just like I was just like my you know I was just really shocked that someone had the um you know just thought that was a good idea um you know because of the stakes here and and and but also like Hickey Looper doesn’t need the money. he’s got a slam dunk election.
Josh Klemons: A slam dunk,
A.J. Carrillo: Um,
Josh Klemons: right?
A.J. Carrillo: so it’s just like, you know, it was just, you know, greed. There’s a lot of, you know, really bad uh there’s nothing good can be drawn from why he’s doing this. There’s no excuse in my mind that makes this look good.
Josh Klemons: So, let’s start with the act blue component because act blue isn’t letting this happen. Like, it’s a choice for them to allow someone to fund raise in someone else’s name and hide that.
Josh Klemons: Um, I saw you tag Josh Nelson, who’s both a sponsor of this podcast, a friend of this podcast, but also the preeminent voice against spam spam packs. Uh,
A.J. Carrillo: Absolutely.
Josh Klemons: I think that’s fair to say. And he um he had a pretty interesting analysis um about what ACLU could do about this. And essentially the answer was they’ve written rules to prevent them needing to deal with something like this. Was that your assessment of Josh’s takeaway?
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah. Yeah. It’s like Yeah. I I really do agree with how Josh’s assessment of this is as well because it’s like they have these rules, but it’s just kind of like, hey, it’s a way for them just to kind of like wash their hands of this saying, hey, we have these rules, but it’s like there’s no cop on the beat enforcing it. Um, and they have these like these guidelines. It’s kind of worthless. And I know that they have a lot on their plate,
Josh Klemons: Oh,
A.J. Carrillo: but nonetheless,
Josh Klemons: of course. Well,
A.J. Carrillo: it’s just like they need to
Josh Klemons: one of the things he flagged was that only a only a party that only somebody who donated by accident could file uh a complaint. But it seems like Taller Rico’s campaign is an injured party and frankly the entire Democratic party is an
A.J. Carrillo: Mhm.
Josh Klemons: interested uh is an invested party because if money is going to a safe seat in Colorado instead of a potential massive generational upset seat in Texas that hurts all of us. But at the very least it seems like the kind of thing where Telerico could say this is unacceptable. But according to Josh Nelson and again I don’t want to speak for him and um if if he’s listening and disagrees he can let me know and I will I will update. But um it sure sounds like they made it to where Taller Rico does not have a say in whether or not this is acceptable. Um and it seems like there should be some common sense. Like Telerico shouldn’t have to complain for Act Blue to say, “Oh yeah, this is clearly not what we intended when we allowed you to brand your pages however you want and gave you the tools to fundra.” So I guess my question to you is like what do
A.J. Carrillo: Exactly.
Josh Klemons: I this the problem does not start and end with that blue but does it start with Is that blue?
A.J. Carrillo: I mean I think act blue it’s their platform so they they they have every right to police how it’s being used and you know it is a game of whack-a-ole that they’re they have to play to some extent because they’ve created this because a lot of the work that Josh has done and and uh and other folks that have sent him data to kind of substantiate you know what he’s been researching um you know act changes is, but unfortunately like people are clearly this this is showing that it gets it’s metastasizing into this new way to do it as opposed to like sending text out and with these fake f you know you know 5,000% matches or whatever it was.
Josh Klemons: Of
A.J. Carrillo: Now they’re manipulating uh you know search and who knows this may have been going on longer than than this than I just found it. I’m sure it has been,
Josh Klemons: Of course.
A.J. Carrillo: but maybe it’s gotten because they kind of tamp down on one channel on the SMS side.
A.J. Carrillo: Now they’re like doing it here on search as a a new way to get in. And then act blue is just kind of like oh well we you know our rules are here but if they’re not enforcing uh it across different channels and it’s kind of like um you know everyone’s just you know see all the scam packs see kind of where to go and now they’re just going to flood into this zone to kind of suck money out of the ecosystem because it’s not going to help actual for the most part it’s not really you know we see in the research it’s most of that money is paying people’s salaries or whatever. It’s essentially just to get paid. It’s not actually going to help get people to vote and help us win elections this November.
Josh Klemons: I mean,
A.J. Carrillo: And it’s like the most critical election in our Yeah.
Josh Klemons: Adam Bonica, a lot of people have done some good research on this,
A.J. Carrillo: Yes.
Josh Klemons: but Adam Bonica obviously is like the preeminent person talking about the fact that so much of this money that is just like being removed
A.J. Carrillo: Yes.
Josh Klemons: from the ecosystem.
A.J. Carrillo: Mhm.
Josh Klemons: And it it’s not just taking money out of campaigns that desperately need it. It’s also minimizing trust to the point where I personally know many people that say, “I will never donate to a Democrat again because I don’t want to be on all these lists.” Um,
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah.
Josh Klemons: so it’s not even a question of like whether or not the money went to a good place or not. It’s the fact that the second you give a dollar to one campaign, you’re getting texts and emails from a hundred other campaigns and I’ve I’ve personally met numerous people who are just like,
A.J. Carrillo: Yep.
Josh Klemons: I’m done. Like I will not I I support campaigns, but I’m not giving them any money. Um, so the the distrust has already happened, you know, like we are already at that place.
A.J. Carrillo: Mhm.
Josh Klemons: So let’s take Act Blue out of it. they obviously as the platform for Democratic campaigns like could decide to do something differently. Um, and let’s recognize that spam packs are going to spam, right?
Josh Klemons: Like it is what it is. How much blame do you think Hickinlooper and his campaign hold? Like is this just a case of an agency saying, “Well, we got to hit our ROI, whatever means necessary.” Or, you know, where does the buck stop on something like this? Like would you know is is this the responsibility of the agency uh that implemented it, the campaign that signed off on it, the candidate that put his name on it, all the above or somebody else altogether
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah. No, I mean after that happened, I mean, I was, you know, I I thought about that, too. I was just kind of like, how did this even come to pass because it’s just like so egregious, um, you know, misuse of joint fundraising pages and and um, you know, and I was curious, too. shows like someone’s like, “Is it really hick and looper?” I’m like, “It absolutely is. I’ve done online fundraising. I’m familiar with how actu works.” And I was like, “Absolutely. This is from the campaign.” But nonetheless,
A.J. Carrillo: I I gave $1 just to just to confirm. Absolutely. Sure enough, yeah, it was absolutely going 100% to Hicker and got my receipt and everything. And uh but like the whole you know looking at it it was kind of like there’s a chain of failure here like and also just a judgment like who at the agency thought that this was a good idea to begin with and then like whoever manages that person internally signed off on this thinking it was a good idea and then of course someone at the campaign itself had us sign off on this and you know said oh yeah it’s a great idea. I highly doubt like this got in front of Hickiner, but nonetheless, like there is, you know, just bad judgment all the way up the all the way up the ladder of approval. Um, and so like, you know, why? And so my next question was like, yeah, I was like, why do they think this was a good idea or what drove them to do this? And maybe it was that like because Hickin Looper is not one, he’s not a sexy candidate really.
A.J. Carrillo: Um, and then number two is just like he’s got a slam dunk race, so there is no sense of urgency that he needs to make that they need to like raise money online,
Josh Klemons: right?
A.J. Carrillo: but I bet like there was probably pressures at that agency to show better ROI based upon, you know, their fixed cost of staff and so forth to run these programs. And it’s like, oh well, let’s try this out and see if we can just, you know, snipe off some extra money by leveraging Terico’s name. And I you know what and there’s probably a multitude of other top races. I bet Sharon Brown and I bet uh you know in Maine you’re seeing probably the same strategy. But I but I was like I can’t I don’t have time to go down this rattle hole to like see how far it goes. But I’m sure Helerico wasn’t the only campaign affected by this.
Josh Klemons: I was going to ask, so you didn’t find any other legitimate campaigns? Like you found spam packs doing it, but you didn’t find any other campaigns like Hick and Looper style doing this in their name?
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah, I he was the only one I found, but again,
Josh Klemons: Got it.
A.J. Carrillo: I didn’t I didn’t Yeah,
Josh Klemons: Doesn’t mean he’s the only one out there.
A.J. Carrillo: he was the only one doing it that way. But, you know, and I suspect that this agency probably was doing it with on behalf of Hickin Looper for the other campaigns, too, just because if they tried it in one place, I’m sure they were rolling it out on the other ones, too. It wouldn’t make sense if they were going to test it in one place. I’m sure they just rolled out everywhere because again at the end of the day I think it was just like they needed to raise money and for some reason they thought this was a good idea and no one second guessed it. Um and it got approved up the chain.
Josh Klemons: So, you’ve already sort of answered this, but if you worked on the Hick and Looper campaign, let’s say you were, you know, associate uh digital person, um how would you justify doing this?
A.J. Carrillo: I don’t I mean I wouldn’t have justified it.
Josh Klemons: Okay,
A.J. Carrillo: I like I would I mean especially considering it was 100%
Josh Klemons: I’m trying to understand is there any way that you could argue, well, this is bad, but it’s not as bad as it seems. And the answer is no.
A.J. Carrillo: I mean,
Josh Klemons: Like,
A.J. Carrillo: if they were if they were No,
Josh Klemons: I’m giving you space to say maybe.
A.J. Carrillo: I don’t think there’s a maybe here. I would say there was a there would be a maybe if it was split 5050 and they didn’t ask for permission.
Josh Klemons: Sure.
A.J. Carrillo: I still think it looks bad because have this fake this act blue page that’s made intentionally to deceive someone that it’s the Torica’s page. Um, but uh but yeah, they’re taking 100% for themselves. I mean, there’s no justification for that. It’s, you know, I think it’s poor judgment. And if, you know, at the at the probably at the at the best way of positioning this, it’s just poor judgment.
A.J. Carrillo: But but honestly, I just think that it’s it’s like criminal defense. You know, they’re just stealing money from Rico basically.
Josh Klemons: Yeah, you you said in LinkedIn that there’s no I mean I think you said something to the extent of this is a long way of saying that he is stealing from Terico. um which is just a wild thing to be doing in October of 2026 when
A.J. Carrillo: I know.
Josh Klemons: we are on the cusp of potentially flipping a Senate seat in Texas.
A.J. Carrillo: Mhm.
Josh Klemons: Uh and he is sucking money into his like Safe Colorado campaign. Um what do you think the role of the party and I know like the party is both Chuck Schumer but us too, you know, like we’re all part of it. How do you think the rank and file of the party should be handling issues like this? like should John Hickin Looper be shamed out of uh you know like lunches? I mean like what is the role of holding folks accountable for their actions um like through this any you know any means necessary because certainly what what Hickinlooper is doing I think I agree with you like is absolutely unacceptable.
Josh Klemons: But how many campaigns are doing awful things in my inbox and in my text messages every day,
A.J. Carrillo: Mhm. For sure.
Josh Klemons: buying my text, buying my email, spamming me, um making it to where the folks that I mentioned earlier like just refuse to give now. Like how do we crack down on the bad actors in the party? And if you don’t have an answer, that’s okay. I’m not looking for you to solve the biggest problem in our party at this moment. But like do you have thoughts on it as somebody who spent a lot of time in this space?
A.J. Carrillo: I mean, a lot of it’s sloppy, too. It’s just like, you know, I last night I got two text messages from shared Brown with the same exact message within like 30 minutes.
Josh Klemons: Sure.
A.J. Carrillo: And I’m like, you know, someone’s they’re clearly they loaded up multiple lists that they were using and I was on two two of them and so I got the same message. It’s like no one duping these things.
A.J. Carrillo: There’s just like just Yeah.
Josh Klemons: They paid twice to hit you.
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah. Exactly.
Josh Klemons: Like they could have You do said less,
A.J. Carrillo: Like if they’re charged by the text like the vendor the tech SMS vendor got paid and I’m sure I’m not the only one that was
Josh Klemons: right? Yeah.
A.J. Carrillo: on multiple list.
Josh Klemons: Somebody got paid twice for texting you,
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah.
Josh Klemons: right? Exactly.
A.J. Carrillo: So like I’m not Yeah.
Josh Klemons: Whether you give or not,
A.J. Carrillo: There was like there’s a lot of sloppiness out there for sure. But also like I don’t have an answer for like how to solve this problem. Um but uh you know I think it it on each of us to like to raise hell about it. You know I did my part once I just saw this. So I was like, “Hey, I don’t have the largest megaphone, but I know someone like Josh Nelson does.” And so I wanted to make sure he was aware of this this new way of doing this because he’s
A.J. Carrillo: he’s definitely helped lead to those rules at Act Blue. Um, but clearly like you know this thing is metastic to a new channel which is like SEO and um and I barely scratched the surface of it just because I knew that if I if I really wanted to go down a rabbit hole, I’m talking we’re talking probably days of like research and seeing who this agency’s other clients were,
Josh Klemons: sir.
A.J. Carrillo: I bet they’re probably doing the same thing for all of them. Um, it looked it appears that they’re probably had a spam-pack customer when with the typo that was in there. And um, you know, it so it’s just the problem is just so it’s it’s not only it’s not just me, it’s not just Josh. I think all of us have a have a small part in raising hell about this and and beating that drum to where the word actu has to respond. They’re not,
Josh Klemons: Right.
A.J. Carrillo: you know, right now they’re probably just going to be like, okay, whatever. But if like people do raise enough how it becomes an issue.
A.J. Carrillo: Um, but it’s like actu needs to have some stronger I think rules where like if an agency is doing stuff like this like you know essentially excuse me my dog was barking.
Josh Klemons: Oh, you’re good. We’re a dog friendly podcast.
A.J. Carrillo: Um but uh Actaloo has to follow some rules that
Josh Klemons: You’re good.
A.J. Carrillo: are I think a bit more stricter than a slap on the wrist. I mean if you really if you really come down to it it’s just like I think agencies doing this they should probably be banned from freaking doing political fundraising because it’s like very egregious. So I think this was a good idea.
Josh Klemons: Yeah.
A.J. Carrillo: I question their judgment you know entirely like this how they run their business. I think it was a good idea. Oh.
Josh Klemons: So what they’re doing is unquestionable in my like unquestionably terrible but they’re obviously very good at some things. So let’s talk about what we the good actors can learn from them the bad actors. How the hell are they showing up in AI search not to mention like just Google search above the Torico campaign which must have spent oodles of money on every component of their digital program.
Josh Klemons: How is John Hickin Looper beating Taller Rico to AI summaries?
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah, that’s the Well, the thing is like the way the AI summary will work is like it’ll have like three different it’ll have at least one or two and in this case I think there was three um ones that showed up. There was like the official Karico one. There was this campaign I recall might have been a third.
Josh Klemons: Okay.
A.J. Carrillo: Um but but what was nefarious about it is like they even like had the thumbnail that the Terica’s official one was using to like make it look as official as possible.
Josh Klemons: Wow. Like the favicon look like them.
A.J. Carrillo: So that mean I precisely.
Josh Klemons: Wow.
A.J. Carrillo: So it’s like they were like they whoever did this was like very intentional and very nuanced in it. So I mean so I you know it looks like they’re probably doing this for multiple people just because it was just so
Josh Klemons: Yeah.
A.J. Carrillo: well thoroughly done.
Josh Klemons: You don’t learn how to do that the first time you do it.
A.J. Carrillo: Yes.
Josh Klemons: For sure.
A.J. Carrillo: Precisely. So,
Josh Klemons: Yeah.
A.J. Carrillo: um I mean in terms of like AI searches like yes, I think you know you have to um we all need to be very smart about how it’s done, but also like it clearly points and it’s unfortunate like the Talgo campaign is going to have to like police this stuff because everyone’s trying to like free free ride off of all of his uh you know scale and and and uh ubiquity online. Um,
Josh Klemons: Right.
A.J. Carrillo: and uh, it’s unfortunate that they they’re going to have to devote resources to basically playing whack-a-ole with people trying to steal from their campaign.
Josh Klemons: Right. What a wasted use of their resources. Like they’re trying to win a Senate seat and they’re having to pay attention to the bad actors taking advantage of an opportunity, if you will. Um Okay.
A.J. Carrillo: Yes.
Josh Klemons: Uh is there anyone fundraising or running digital in general right now that you’re excited about at the moment? And if not, that’s fine.
Josh Klemons: Um but always love to know who the folks in the space are the most excited about.
A.J. Carrillo: I mean, you know, it’s it’s tough because like even the good actors like Ter Rico are spamming the hell out of me, too. And I’m pretty sure you’re seeing that as well. So,
Josh Klemons: Oh
A.J. Carrillo: it’s just like this tragedy of the commons whereas like everyone’s having to like do all of the all of the above, including the worst tactics possible to like squeeze out money. And um you know, I’ve given a few dollars to folks, but again, like if I give someone my email or my phone number, it’s just going to be like thrown on all these lists that everyone’s sharing. and um you know my spam folder within my iMes is just loaded with all this garbage. Um it’s great that Apple now filters it out so I don’t have to deal with it. I know I know Android folks are like we’ve had this for years but um for me it’s like finally you don’t have to deal with it but
Josh Klemons: Yeah.
A.J. Carrillo: it just shows like how pathetic it is that everyone’s doing this stuff and it’s just you know for them I guess it’s just a spray and pace or pay and spray system where like they’ll just like just throw it all out there and yeah we’ll squeeze out this 1% or whatever and you know it’s fine but it’s like there could be a lot better way of doing this where people are more receptive if they actually opted into it as opposed to just like hammering folks. So,
Josh Klemons: I am Go,
A.J. Carrillo: I don’t think there’s any like one that stands out that’s doing a great job because I don’t think anyone they’re all using the same firms and all the same firms are doing the same stuff. So, it’s just like I don’t really see anyone um doing it well at least in terms of like organically because I think they’re penalized if they don’t. It seems like if it you know from the campaign itself like hey everyone else is doing it you
Josh Klemons: right,
A.J. Carrillo: need to be doing it too.
Josh Klemons: right. I am a glutton for punishment when it comes to my inbox. I am on like all the list, but I never give anyone my phone number. Um, ever. Like maybe I have in the past a few times, but like I never sign up for text programs. I don’t like texts from candidates. I I like emails. I don’t like text. But it is wild to me how many campaigns I’ve gotten my number anyway, you know? Like I because every time you get on DBL, like there’s your number getting shared. I don’t know. It’s like wild. And or maybe it’s coming from even further back where I gave my number to Obama to find out who his VP was going to be. I don’t know where the hell that number came from,
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah. No,
Josh Klemons: but like it’s wild.
A.J. Carrillo: I I haven’t lived in I haven’t lived in California in 20 years and I’m still getting stuff from there. Like there’s an old list circulating from being in being in LA or being in,
Josh Klemons: Yeah.
A.J. Carrillo: you know, up in Northern California when I live there that’s circulating and apparently now it’s been shared with like Republicans. I get like Republicans stuff too for California specifically and I’m just like someone’s just pedaling this old list
Josh Klemons: Yeah.
A.J. Carrillo: and people keep buying it.
Josh Klemons: Um, I will say just because we were talking about a lot of bad actors, um, Cat Abigazel has been on the pod twice and, um, she obviously lost her primary, um, but she ran a very innovative fundraiser. ing and she ran a very innovative campaign period. Uh her field program was phenomenal.
A.J. Carrillo: Yes.
Josh Klemons: Her digital program was phenomenal and her grassroots fundraising program was phenomenal. Um and she did some really cool things where she was instead of doing uh call time, she was like live streaming on Twitch and YouTube uh and bringing in just loads of money um
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah, that’s right.
Josh Klemons: in like really cool ethical ways. Um, and so yeah, I’m a I she’s been on the pod twice because I am a huge fan of like the program she ran and excited to see what she does now with her like it’s called Kapow, her new organization.
Josh Klemons: Um, but I think she’s an example of somebody who like really tried to respect respect the voters and she’s not the only one, but I will say there’s not enough folks like her um that run for higher office without
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah,
Josh Klemons: debasing themselves into this like
A.J. Carrillo: there’s a there’s a lot of pressures too. I mean, the last campaign I managed, you know, this is 10 years ago going on, but um you know, even then it was just like we want you to share your list for, you know, we’re going to endorse you, but hey, like can you give us your fundraising? And I was like, I don’t I spent a bunch of money to raise to build this list and I’m going to give it to you and then it’s going to be
Josh Klemons: All right.
A.J. Carrillo: shared, you know,
Josh Klemons: Everywhere.
A.J. Carrillo: a billion times over.
Josh Klemons: Right.
A.J. Carrillo: It’s just like totally devalues all that work we did,
Josh Klemons: Right.
A.J. Carrillo: particularly if you’re going to roll it out this in the middle of the cycle.
A.J. Carrillo: I was just like I, you know, absolutely not. And I,
Josh Klemons: Yep.
A.J. Carrillo: you know, I people didn’t like that that uh that response to it, but it just like um you know, I just I thought it was just a terrible thing. I was like, “Okay, fine with the endorsement, but I don’t think that I need to be sharing my our list with you.”
Josh Klemons: Katie Porter famously sold her list but told folks they couldn’t use it till after election day. Um like she recognized that she was devaluing it by putting it out there but she was also trying to prepay off debt and
A.J. Carrillo: Yep.
Josh Klemons: whatnot. Um, but you know,
A.J. Carrillo: Mhm.
Josh Klemons: like when our lists are our greatest asset, that is a problem, you know, like uh and I don’t know how to fix that.
A.J. Carrillo: Mhm.
Josh Klemons: Like I know a lot of campaigns they invest and a lot of them are investing ethically and some are investing less. So, uh, but like you said, you built that list.
Josh Klemons: It cost a fortune to do. There’s obviously ways to buy emails, but then there’s also ways to grow your email list organically and or, you know, like righteously. Um, but yeah, it’s hard when a campaign ends. And I know bad actor in every way, but like when Scott Walker, my previous governor, uh, I know he rented his list to everyone trying to pay off his debt.
A.J. Carrillo: Yes.
Josh Klemons: You know, I was getting emails from Scott Walker constantly from everyone running for president against each other, you know, and he didn’t care. He was just anyone who would pay him to use his list. And, you know, it looks ridiculous and it weakens the list, but like it’s how he paid off his debt. So, uh, yeah, we definitely need to, uh, get some money out of politics and make some systemic changes to the entire system. Uh, for sure. Uh,
A.J. Carrillo: absolutely.
Josh Klemons: how how can folks keep in touch with you moving forward?
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah. I mean, I’m on Blue Sky.
A.J. Carrillo: Uh just my last name at AJ Coreo.B Sky, I think.social social and then uh on LinkedIn I’m there as well. Feel free to reach out to me. Those are probably the easiest ways to to to find me online and uh always happy to to
Josh Klemons: I’ll have links to both of those.
A.J. Carrillo: chat.
Josh Klemons: Cool. Well, thanks so much for coming on. Um, it’s a shame what the topic had to be, but I appreciate you um, bringing it to light. It’s a conversation we should all be having more often.
A.J. Carrillo: Yeah, I know. I’m happy to have I guess not happy to have found it, but uh I’m glad I did because it’s like clearly um you know impacting
Josh Klemons: It’s It’s happening whether or not you found it.
A.J. Carrillo: some Yeah.
